Overview

Nestled in the heart of Staten Island, Joyful Cantonese Restaurant 喜粤农家菜 offers a refreshing take on authentic Cantonese cuisine. Located at 1743 Richmond Rd, this eatery blends traditional flavors with a friendly neighborhood vibe, making it a must-visit for lovers of Chinese food seeking genuine tastes away from the city's busier hubs.

The menu shines brightest with its hearty staples and regional specialties. Signature dishes like the Cured Meat Clay Pot Rice and Hometown Gouzai Duck Rice showcase deep, savory layers that speak to time-honored cooking techniques. Equally impressive is the Peking Duck, celebrated for its crisp skin and tender meat, a dish cherished by both long-time Cantonese food enthusiasts and curious newcomers. The Crispy Roast Pork carries a perfect balance of crunchy texture and juicy depth, highlighting the kitchen’s skill in roasting.

For those drawn to comforting simplicity, the congee and various rice rolls, including the Dry Shrimp Rice Roll, offer silky textures paired with delicate flavors. Their rendition of fried rice and noodles brings a satisfying touch, with favorites like Beef Lo Mein and Singapore-style Fried Rice Noodles delivering robust tastes that stay true to Cantonese culinary roots. Each dish is crafted with an eye for authenticity, reflecting the bold yet nuanced palate of southern China.

The dining space itself is cozy, adorned with wooden accents and gentle lighting that create a warm, inviting atmosphere — perfect for intimate meals or casual gatherings. While the restaurant is not expansive, its thoughtful design keeps the focus on a relaxed yet attentive dining experience. This setting, combined with attentive service, elevates each visit beyond mere sustenance.

Joyful Cantonese is ideally suited for those who appreciate traditional Chinese fare without pretense, including families and local residents seeking comfort food or small groups eager to explore Cantonese classics. The early days were marked by some operational growing pains as staff and workflow found their rhythm. However, recent feedback points to marked improvements with a more seasoned team delivering smoother service and a consistently delicious menu that rivals the best Chinatown options in Brooklyn and Manhattan.

In a landscape where authentic Cantonese flavors can sometimes be hard to find outside of major metropolitan centers, Joyful Cantonese offers a heartfelt nod to tradition paired with fresh execution. Whether you come for the smoky, savory roast meats, the delicate rice rolls, or the soul-satisfying congee, you’ll discover a place where the care for food and guests is clear from the first bite to the last.

From the moment I walked in, I could tell this place takes pride in every detail. The atmosphere strikes that perfect balance between cozy and elegant — warm lighting, soft music, and a calm buzz of conversation that makes you feel comfortable right away. The décor is simple but thoughtful, with wooden accents and subtle touches that make the space feel inviting rather than overdone. The service was exceptional from start to finish. The staff greeted me with genuine smiles and immediately made me feel welcome. Our server was friendly, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about the food. They didn’t just take our order — they explained the dishes, offered helpful suggestions, and checked in just enough to make sure everything was perfect without hovering. That kind of attentiveness can really elevate an experience, and it did here. The food itself was outstanding. Every dish looked beautiful, smelled incredible, and tasted even better. The appetizer — a roasted vegetable and burrata plate — was fresh, colorful, and perfectly seasoned. For the main course, I had the grilled salmon with a citrus glaze and roasted potatoes. The fish was cooked flawlessly — crisp on the outside, tender and moist on the inside — and the sauce added just the right brightness. My friend ordered the braised short ribs, which were melt-in-your-mouth tender and bursting with flavor.

This newly opened Cantonese-style restaurant offers great-tasting food overall. However, the space is a bit limited, and the wait time can be a little longer due to the small kitchen. Despite that, it’s still worth a visit.

They just opened today so it is a bit chaotic but overall the food is pretty good, on par with what you would get in Brooklyn, Flushing, and Manhattan chinatowns. Their Fried Dough “you tiao” is one of the best I’ve had outside of Taiwan though. I hope they can continue to improve their food and service and not go downhill as many new places tend to do. My two complaints were: My rice rolls did not come with any sauce. Thankfully I can make sauce myself at home. The lady who took our order said 10-15 minutes so we paid first, I took my mom home before returning, 20 min or so endeavor and when I got back, I still had to wait and they forgot I paid already. (They need a system or stamp to show order is paid). Edit: day 2, I called ahead for order, was told 10-15 minutes and now it has been 45 minutes…still no food. I only ordered 3 rice rolls, 2 fried dough sticks, 1lb roast park, and congee…. I witnessed a guy take 15 minutes to get the bill, a whole table sat and waited 10 minutes before walking out without ordering due to the wait. This is not good… despite how good the food is, this is abysmal service. 2nd update. 70 minutes later I have no food. They never even made it. This is stupid. I sat in their store waiting for 60+ minutes watching other foods being made. I could’ve gone to brooklyn and back, finished eating, done my dishes in all this time. I took a seat as instructed and apparently the same guy who told me to sit and wait… ended up voiding my order sometime during the 70 minutes of waiting in their store. Why? They thought I left. I was sitting in front of them the whole time. Never moved. Had even checked 30 minutes in and they said almost done. when I finally left, the guy who waited 15 minutes to get his bill… his table was never cleaned by the time I left… so it was left dirty for over 45 minutes. 2025 update: It may be under new ownership now because all the staff are different, seems like a really seasoned restaurant crew who are competent, friendly, and very efficient. The food is also super delicious, on par with brooklyn chinatowns. True Cantonese flavors and styles.

Food is delicious and fresh! Nice size portions and the duck was perfect. 100% recommended it’s nice not having to go over the bridge to get fresh duck. The staff is super sweet and friendly as well.
